The Secrets of Noh Masks – A Bilingual Japanese–English Photographic Journey into the Art of Noh

Experience the profound beauty and mystery of traditional Japanese Noh through The Secrets of Noh Masks, a stunning bilingual (Japanese–English) edition that captures both the artistry and atmosphere of Noh theatre.

This dynamic photo collection presents 32 Noh masks created over a half-century career by master Kongō-school shite actor and Important Intangible Cultural Property holder, Michishige Udaka. Each mask is introduced through powerful full-color photography that faithfully reproduces the delicate shadows, expressions, and subtle emotional nuances unique to Noh masks.

Beyond the visual exploration, the book provides in-depth explanations of:

  • The history and evolution of Noh theatre

  • Performance structure and staging traditions

  • The meticulous process of Noh mask creation

Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Noh represents one of Japan’s most refined performing arts traditions. This volume serves as both an artistic showcase and an educational guide, making it an essential reference for scholars, performers, collectors, and admirers of Japanese culture.

This edition is the bilingual version of The Secrets of Noh Masks originally published by Kodansha USA.
